Peace Conference

The second World Anglican Peace Conference is now being held in Okinawa.
The primates (Presiding Bishops) of the Anglican Churches in Japan, Korea, the Philippines and the United States have all been taking part, together with many others. Bishop Luke Kenichi Muto, Rev. Catherine Hiroko Yoshioka and Hiroko Baker from Kyushu Diocese are among them.

Presiding Bishop Nathaniel Uematsu of Japan gave a moving sermon at the opening service, telling everyone of how a former American prisoner of the Japanese during World War II, one of the ‘Doolittle Raiders’, overcame his ill feeling towards Japan to become reconciled and play the role of ‘bride’s father’ for a Japanese couple (now Bishop Uematsu and his wife). Oddly enough, surviving members of the Doolittle raiders have been holding a reunion in Florida this week, coinciding with the Peace Conference.

As shown on the top page of this web site and the page for St Paul’s Church, Fukuoka, Bishop Luke Muto is now Bishop of Kyushu, Bishop Gabriel Igarashi having retired (to become Senior Chaplain at Rikkyo University). I shall add a page of photos from Bishop Luke’s installation on April 6th soon.

On the evening before that ceremony, Rev. Kenzo Koshiyama gave a talk about the continuing problems of Tohoku, especially those relating to nuclear issues. I have already posted the photo below, and a number of photos from the installation of Bishop Luke, on Facebook.
